Re: Looking for Wise Council...
I really appreciate this thread, because this is really at the front of my mind right now (btw: I love Dream Theater, too, Brent. Images and Words is one of my all time favorite albums). I really wish Christian music was like it was about 20-30 years ago. There was so much, and it was so easy to find.

Re: Looking for Wise Council...
I choose to listen to mostly Christian music (almost exclusively) because of the effect most secular music has on me. For example, if I listen to some Jimi Hendrix or Van Halen for some guitar inspiration, I eventually find myself listening to worse and worse stuff until it starts hurting me spiritu...

Re: Pushing too many boundaries
Soldiers Under Command and To Hell with the Devil were awesome. It got really soft after that. They never had much meat to the lyrics (comparing Stryper lyrics to Petra lyrics is like comparing Joel Osteen to Billy Graham), but they were still cool. I think the new title is all about the shock, but ...

Re: CPR
At this stage in Bob’s life, why does he need BTTR 2, J&H 2, or anything else Petra related. He’s done everything you can do up in Christian music, and has a well deserved retirement in front of him. Look at the lyrics to Godpleaser. Based on the lives his music has changed, his Father will say “wel...

Re: Pushing too many boundaries
It sounds okay... but they really phoned it in on that one. “Sorry doesn’t always make it starry?” I know Michael doesn’t write insightful lyrics like Bob Hartman or Wayne Kirkpatrick... but he can do better than that (Sorry, love ya, Mike!).

Re: CPR
If Bob Hartman is serving God in a church, and is happy and content doing so, then that is wonderful. I always thought Petra would be a ministry that would continue well after Bob, John Schlitt, and Louie Weaver retired. When No Doubt was released, it seemed that might be the case. Unfortunately, th...

Re: Pushing too many boundaries
Big hair and spandex was the style at the time. Almost every band looked like that.... KISS, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Aerosmith, Motley Crue... countless others. Stryper seems to get the most crap over it (well, with Poison, anyway). That was just the time. The music was solid. Soldiers Under Command was ...

Re: Pushing too many boundaries
Your average listener is not going to look into the theology behind the title, they're going to see the title and think Stryper is slapping God in the face. Maybe. Maybe not. People having been making similar arguments against Christian rock in general for decades, but a lot of people have been led...

Re: Pushing too many boundaries
In all seriousness, though, I've taken it all in, and I get the point of view of the band and their supporters. I just don't agree. When you represent Christ, you have a bigger responsibility than just selling music with a controversial tag line. I agree Stryper needs to get people talking, but they...

Actually... yeah. I loved Lawry’s (in all its synthesized glory!).Mountain Man wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:53 pmVisions is incredible and might even be better than anything Vangelis recorded (and I say that as someone who is a huge fan of Vangelis). Kinda makes you wish John Slick had done a solo album, doesn't it?

Who are those guys? Didn’t they play that gospel rock-n-roll stuff?Mountain Man wrote: ↑Tue Feb 13, 2018 8:19 amHe was in a rock band called Petra. Perhaps you've heard of them?
Seriously, though... digging this disc. It will be mine.

Pushing too many boundaries
I have to say something, because for once, I’m more than a little disturbed. I realize Christian Music is a business. I realize, as coined by former WCW president Eric Bischoff, that “Controversy Creates Cash.” I also get that Stryper has long contended that they are “Christians in a band, not a Chr...
