My ears are burniiiiiiing...

I haven't weighed in incisively, because I really don't give two poops who plays with who. If memory serves, I've seen:

• John S/Louie/Ronnie/David/Jim
• John S/Louie/Pete/Kevin/Lonnie
• John S/Louie/Quentin/Greg B/Bryce (I may have also seen this incarnation with Trent, who knows.)
• John S/Bob/Greg B/Paul
• Bob/John D/Bill/Greg
• John/Ozzy/Enosh/Ringo

and I enjoyed every show thoroughly.

I've never seen Greg (High Volzage), John L, Slick, or Mark.

I prefer John Schlitt based on my own taste, but if I was asked to make my own greatest hits compilation, it would span the entire catalog. I'd buy a Petra record if Pete sang the whole thing.

What I'm getting at is that Petra is beyond their lead singer, at least for me.

If Jamie Rowe was the lead singer of Petra, it would the perfect band.
That's alot of lineups! Did you get a chance to see Robert M. Hartman at all? :P

I agree with what you say. The Petra sound musically and lyrically is so much more then their lead singer, I just prefer John's style more then Greg's.

He listed the original Petra line up, which included Bob.

And Jonathan, which one was Mat? Ozzy or Ringo?

I like both eras too.....I just like the songs with John better because of the raspy rock sound.

BUT I just found this one by Greg yesterday and I really like it. I didn't know they did bluesy rock like this.

Shawn, I said from the beginning that I like both. It's just that the transition was a bit of a shock at first after growing to love the GXV version. My point was simply that I know a lot of people who never got back into Petra after Greg left. I really believe that people would come out that haven't been to a Petra concert, or maybe any concert, for many years if Greg was the lead singer.

Something I just thought of, who actually owns the "traveling" Petra? I remember hearing that Bob always owned the Petra name and was in charge of all recording. But somewhere along the line I remember Sue Dempster saying that John had invested a lot of money to buy the touring rights. I wonder where that is all at right now.

You know Jan, that song has been really stuck in my head recently. It would be a great song for someone to remake, but have a 2nd guatarists just going wild in the background (Joe Satriani style). I'm not sure when the song was written (on the Album More Power to Ya), but it sounded like their really early stuff. I came to appreciate it more as I got older.

BForm,

That's incorrect...Bob gave John the touring rights! :)

Yeah, I managed to see Bob with the original lineup at the reunion concert.

Let's see...Mat, I think he was Ringo's tech.

It's really good too see how many people like both era's. I asked the question because it seemed like a lot of people only liked one or the other, not both. I don't know about all of you, but I listen to PETRA for the strong lyrics and messages Bob put into his songs. Every new cd that came out, at first I would listen to the music, then I would listen and read the lyrics to really get an understanding of what Bob was trying to say through that song\album.

To try and sum it all up, Petra is not just about the lead singer, or who is in the band at the time. For me, it has been and always will be about the message behind the song.

BTW I agree with Brent almost all of the time.

Jonathan has a way of summing things up...It boils down to personal preference, and really, when you're looking at the big picture, is personal preference all that big a deal? :)

It's been awhile since we've had one of these threads though, so maybe it was time for another one.

Go Bob!

Post by BForm » Thu Mar 04, 2010 6:48 pm

Shawn, I totally agree. Bob is the one constant and the main reason why I have remained a fan. Though his songwriting has been trashed by artsy elitists for being too simplistically biblical and filled with cliches, it is his biblical consistency combined with great music that continues to keep me interested in all things Petra. Some people prefer music that can mean anything you want it to mean. Not so with scripture and not so with Petra's music.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard a Petra song and it reminds me of scripture and the application for what's going on in my life. Likewise, I often read scripture and it reminds of Petra songs. We are commanded to sing to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Well, Petra has done just that.

Consolation Prize

I had another idea that may stir things up. Remembering that Bob has some great songs that have yet to be recorded, if Petra is not going to come out with another recording, I would love to see Bob work with a group of younger people that really want honor God. He could take those songs, rework them in a way that would be more appealing to a younger crowd, and see what happens. Could be interesting.
