If I Had To Pick Another Singer For Petra...

Post by ErioL » Thu Nov 04, 2010 10:40 am

Just based on vocal abilities and interpretations, I keep imagining what some of Petra's rocking tunes (John Schlitt tunes) would sound like with Chris Cornell belting them out. I know this is a meaningless post but I've kinda of thought about it the past few days. I hear some similarities, Chris is just a bit more beastly to me and I think hes one of the few guys whos voice would allow him to step in and sing as well if not better than John. just a fantasy haha

The Late Steve Lee from Gotthard would have been stellar.

Michael Sweet would fit in perfectly... If he wasn't such a busy guy! Ken Tamplin may be an interesting choice. Steven Patrick, depending on how he sounds now, would work. Petra is not an easy gig: range is a must. Greg Baily, interestingly enough, was quite good himself on the Farewell Tour. John Elefante would also be a good choice.

I think Jamie Rowe of Guardian could do it.

Chris Cornell is quite possibly the greatest rock vocalist of all time. It would be interesting to hear.

I totally agree with you, Brent! Steve is my second favorite singer after John Schlitt. Tragically, he is no longer with us...

I'm not sure. Glenn Kaiser, maybe? Totally different sound, but I bet it would make Petra's songs sound awesome in a whole different way. Same with Rick Florian. He'd probably do a good job.

But I couldn't disagree more with the idea of Michael Sweet. His voice is the single reason I never got into liking Stryper. Too high-pitched and too clean.

Right. Sweets voice is...too sweet and clean. Thats why I say Cornell would have been interesting to hear. Doing tunes like Mine Field and Counsel of the Holy, Cornell would rip it up IMO. Extremely distinct rock voice.

Steve Lee was one of the most underrated singers in the world. He was the best singer we've ever had in Switzerland. Saw him 5 times in concert. On the youtube clip posted above I was in the front row. An unfortetable night.... I still have a signed card by him. R.I.P.

The only singer I like even close to as much as John is Steven Tyler (back then). I mean, when we're only talking about the ones who can sing that high. I loved Lou Gramm's voice in Foreigner, but I'm not sure he could blast out the high notes in the Petra songs. I don't really like the way Chris Cornell's voice sounds, he sounds kind of nasally to me. That guy Steve Lee sounds good in the video, I had not heard of him.

What if one of these guys would have been in the band?
1. Jeff Fenolt, the TBN guy who lied about being in Black Sab and was busted for that and being a liar about his parents.
2. Carman.

I wonder what Petra would have been like with a chick out front? Plumb would get my vote.
