4 Classic Petra Samples.
I am impressed! Why can't it be the 16th now so I can have the whole album?

Interesting, good recordings. Will be strange for someone who got J&H as their first Petra album. These tunes don't stray from the original much. Sounds like Beat the System worked with a 1993 sound. Beama Seat stands out as a hit, this one has been done well. Adonai sounds like the original a lot. This will be a nice album in the collection. It's like a double take without the timing changes, and violins. I like Double Take.

We have to keep in mind that these are pre-mastered version and will likely sound much better after mastering. Personally I'm amazed that Greg was still able to hit some of those notes, especially in Adonai.

I'm liking it. Much beefier than the originals... probably 25% more beef once they're mastered. I'm really looking forward to this album coming out. I remember as a kid the biggest deal of the year for me was Petra's latest release coming out. It's very cool that after all these years we can still look forward to it again.

Yeah, it does sound that way. For me, the trademark of Louie's playing isn't flamboyant chops of death, but his ability to set up such a deep pocket. Not sure exactly of the science behind it, but he does groove like nobody's business. He cites Steve Gadd and Rod Morganstein as his biggest influences, and they're deep groove drummers as well. I love it.BForm wrote:Just think. We're probably getting the real Louie and not a sub!!!!

Man, I like the tunes. This is going to be good. It would be better with a little less compression though. Those samples were pretty smashed.

I noticed the same thing, but this is a premastered version and good mix engineers dont send ME stuff thats already compressed like this. I think they boosted the signal and put a master limiter on there just to get the volume up for these demos. If they really are that squished....I won't be able to listen to the record.brent wrote:Man, I like the tunes. This is going to be good. It would be better with a little less compression though. Brent do you mean the sample rate compression? or the compression layer on the vocals?

Re: 4 Classic Petra Samples.
this is growing on me real quick... after listening again with a better system! Bema Seat kicks butt.
One thing the samples reveal is none or little vocal from Mark Kelly...I hope this changes with the final, I think this is going to be a blast!

Maybe it'll have to grow on me, but I'm not really liking Greg's voice much. It sounds a lot different than it did in the 80s. I really like the updated music, though.

Hmmm...doesn't sound that much different to me. Actually, I was extremely impressed by what he's retained at his age.

Re: 4 Classic Petra Samples.
I can point to hundreds of records where "good" engineers did pre smash mixes, because the artist wanted it this way. Ever hear of Metalica? Their last one was a good example. It was so smashed that the mastering engineer declined to master it because he did not want his name on it. There was nothing he could do with a pre smashed mix. It happens every day. Once something is compressed and the waveforms have been normalized and squared off, there is no changing it.ErioL wrote:I noticed the same thing, but this is a premastered version and good mix engineers dont send ME stuff thats already compressed like this. John Lawry recorded and mixed the whole thing in his studio.
