If I'm not mistaken the royalities will go to the owner of Petra(Bob) because its put under the Petra Licenses, but I could be totally wrong about it. Many moons ago I had someone explain this too me about how all that licenses work with songs and the way that it was explained too me was the only way the song writer retains any royalities is if the song is under the heading "used with permission", but if its on a Petra album its been put under the Petra Licenses and is basically owned by(this version) whoever owns Petra.
Don't get me lying maybe its better for Brent to explain it.

Whatever the case, I'm sure they did whatever they might have needed to as far as licensing or permission to record the song and any royalties will be taken care of.

I don't remember what I was told about their deal. Bob is the primary owner. I think he has just about all of the publishing wrapped up. I am almost certain Greg still gets paid royalties. There are many types of royalties. Royalties are paid for music played in public, recorded, distributed, broadcasted, etc. The laws are different in every country. Some countries have no enforceable laws when it comes to recording and distributing covers. In the US, you pay a royalty to the publishing rights holder. If the holder does not want the song recorded and distributed, they can go through the legal system and keep it from being done.

So whoever is the publishing rights holder would get the royalities which in this case would be Petra? I would think that Greg would hold some type of rights for royalities though, but I do know that if Petra has recorded it then that version on the song is actually owned by Petra and not under the heading "used by permission" unless noted which if it is than the song writer would retain the royalites from it.

Re: Italian Davi & Schlitt to release "Praise Ye the Lord"
Shell is right; they obtained permissions/rights, recorded the song and are going to market it in Italy and S. America, where Davi has a following.
We all know who originally wrote the song - so what? There are many Petra songs that have been re-recorded by others over the years - take a look at the Dinosaur album.
The folks I've been working with speak better Italian than English, granted; they are very sweet people and this song is being marketed as part of a campaign to raise awareness of child abuse in Italy.
I hope they do well with it, and they have plans in the works for a tour, which would be terrific. Italy is one country John (or Petra) has never played in.
Italy is on my bucket list... would love to see the Motherland!

Re: Italian Davi & Schlitt to release "Praise Ye the Lord"
Although I am not an expert on how it works by any means, I do know that licensing and all that is somewhat different in Europe than it is in the States. I ordered DVDs of a TV show I like from the UK because they pulled the original music soundtrack and substituted generic music because of licensing, and that's not the case in the UK (at least not with the DVDs I ordered). I'm usually not picky about that sort of thing, but in this case the original soundtrack is important to the storyline. It was actually cheaper to order my DVDs from Europe.
And yes, so long as people get whatever permission might be necessary, anyone can record anything. There are a lot of songs that have been recorded multiple times.
Should I reiterate the Italian guy is cute or is that overkill?

Well for one thing it shows creative dependence - That's What.sue d. wrote:We all know who originally wrote the song - so what?

For the record I would not want to hear Greg sing "Just Reach Out''

Re: Italian Davi & Schlitt to release "Praise Ye the Lord"
As was pointed out, there have been multiple versions of multiple songs, so if that constitutes creative dependence, a lot of people would be in trouble. Anyone who wanted to do this sort of thing could if they wanted to; it's not unheard of.
If you don't want to hear a different version of a song, there's always the option of simply not listening to it. Just sayin'.
