And now to the first praise album...

Image

Didja know... Petra Praise is the second most successful album from the band, and was certified Gold in 1998.

Forum only allows for 10 poll options, so if you want to vote for any of the last four:

11. Hallowed Be Thy Name
12. Friends (All in the Family of God)
13. I Will Call Upon the Lord
14. We Exalt Thee

...Just post the name.

This isn't a bad album, but unlike the other two praise albums, it doesn't feel like a Petra album at all. I like it, but it would probably be near the bottom of my ranking.

Another weird fact is that being a Native Spanish speaker and living in a Spanish-speaking country, I happened to stumble upon the Spanish version (Petra en Alabanza) first, and I really dug that album. But now, for some reason, whenever I listen to the original, it just doesn't feel natural. It seems I got so used to the Spanish one.

"The Battle Belongs to the Lord" or "Jesus, Jesus, Glorious One" are probably my favorites.

I love it and would have to vote for almost all of them, at least I Exalt Thee, I Love the Lord, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Jesus Glorious One, and Take Me In.

My vote is for We Exalt Thee. I felt the Holy Spirit for the first time when I was eight years old, listening to that song. I kept asking my Mom to repeat the song while I cried and cried. Amazing memories. I've never felt the anointing on any song like that one.

"Pethead" is not a title. It's a way of life.

I Love The Lord is by far my favorite on the album. Take Me In is also a good song.

What? I think it's the opposite for me.

I remember when this came out in 89. I was so proud of being a Petra fan. It lacked the album feel, but the sound was so up to date at the time, I thought no current band at the time could touch Petra. Also I Love The Lord has always been my favorite all time Petra song. I even covered it with my band. Great times indeed in my life with the Petra soundtrack in the background as I was turning into a young man.

I previewed this record at Christian Book & Music in Broken Arrow, OK the week it came out. I listened on the headphones. I remember it like it was yesterday. The guitar tone sucked, the drums were not real and sounded programmed. Friends stank soooo much that I did not buy it. Someone gave me a copy, I think. What a turd I thought....and probably said out loud as I was putting it back on the shelf.

Fast forward to 2009 or so. John Lawry and I were talking about other things, as he was providing some tracks for me. We were on the topic of Macs and how different models varied the timing of tracks in ProTools, Cubase and Nuendo. Then we got to talking about the old sequencers used back in the day and how they were all over the place, "like when we made the first Petra praise record." He told me the story about how it was done and what not. It is interesting and I gained a new respect for the album (sans Friends...still hate it). I do have a couple of songs that I listen to if and when I listen to P&W music. I much prefer the John solo band Petra Praise record. That one sounded dated when it was released, but it was good. A couple of tunes actually make me tear up, they are that good at punching a button.

Well, yeah. This one has several songs were it hardly sounds like Petra. Maybe because a lot of the songs have male and/or female choirs headlining that makes it unlike any Petra album. I'm not saying that's inherently a bad thing. Just stating the reasons why I think it doesn't feel like a Petra album. There's also "Friends" which is a weird song in an of itself.

That's it. This album has female singers on it too. Not exactly Petrafied.

Yeah...but a choir is a bit different. I would kind of like to have some Petra/black choir Bob gets funky riff stuff.

I really liked what they did with "Who's On The Lord's Side" on Unseen Power and some of these could have used that treatment. Watching & hearing Petra do that song live was awesome; They did it as late as the PP2 tour.

Yesterday I revisited the Spanish version of the album, and found myself enjoying it more than I do the original. As a matter of fact, I think I've always enjoyed more the Spanish version than I do this one. Maybe it's because it was the first of the two that I heard, or because I'm a native Spanish speaker, I don't know. I still maintain that the album doesn't feel like a Petra album per se, but it's weird how each person can perceive each album differently.

I'm also surprised to see the amount of love for "I Love the Lord". It's a pretty great song though.
