Petra Live in 1978

Post by Thief » Sat Jan 25, 2014 7:43 pm

Found this really cool video from Petra in Rob Frazier's official website. It is from 1978 and features Petra singing a couple of old songs from their first three albums.

Obviously Frazier is the one on keyboards, but anyone know who the other two are? That drummer doesn't look like Bill Glover, or does he?

I'm pretty sure that is Bill Glover on drums, and John DeGroff playing bass. 8) I'll see if I can find some pics from Wikipedia and post them, but I'm not going to do it tonight.

I asked Bob who these guys were when first this video surfaced. They're not Glover and DeGroff. The bass player is Tommy Bolles and the drummer is Mike Martin.

Never heard of them. Were they official members or just fill-in musicians? They seem pretty into it to be passing members. At least the drummer who is even singing a song and doing it pretty well.

I found an "old" thread (2011) where somebody had brought the same video. Sorry to have brought the same subject again.

Okay, they may have had someone filling in or been between members or something. I was thinking since it was late 70s that it was Bill G. and John D. I haven't been able to find any old pictures of Bill or John playing drums or bass as ofyet, but they're probably out there. I'll do some more hunting later.

I don't remember seeing the old thread; I think it's okay to post a video that might not have been seen in awhile.

This is one of the oldest pictures I've seen of Petra. Josh Renaud posted it on his site (Petra Rocks My World) a long time ago, but the picture is so small that I can't tell who is who, other than Bob and Greg.

There is an old picture of them from 1977 or 1978 (John D, Bill G, Greg V, Bob and Greg H) on Wikipedia but they're not playing their instruments.

Yeah, that's another picture that Josh had on his PRMW website. I know because I'm the one who uploaded it to Wikipedia

Yet another pretty cool picture. However, I don't know what year it could be from. Since DeGroff and Glover are in, could it be 1977 or 1978 after Come and Join Us, when Greg was still a guest singer?

On both pictures it could be John DeGroff, but on the group picture it's definitely not Bill Glover. Already in 1976 Bill was an on and off member. On Come And Join Us he's a guest musician and not a band member, because he wasn't always with the band. I've got scans of some of the original 1974 promo photographs (downloaded from back when GHF has a website). I see the upload-picture-functionality disappeared, so I'll see if I can find another way to upload them here, or maybe someone else can.

Here's a link to the Wikipetra Facebook page with Bill G playing drums. There are a bunch of pictures on this page; there may be some others of Petra in the 70s.
