Never Say Dinosaur

Post by BriGuyPEI » Thu Jun 18, 2015 7:51 pm

I dug out the Petra tribute album, which I haven't listened to in years. I hadn't been very impressed with it before, but I think after Double Take I've become more comfortable with the idea of the songs sounding radically different from the originals. There's some decent stuff on there. Although I think that The Stand must have watched an all-night marathon of Friends prior to recording Pied Piper. The lyrics don't even fit that tune pacing-wise. They had to invent some new ones just to try to make them fit. I have to resist the urge to do the rapid hand claps during the verses.

I want to like that album, but I just can't seem to. :(

+1.

Very odd they all chose to radically re-interpret the songs.

For me, there's actually some stuff on there that I really liked. If I went back and listened, I could probably pick out half that I would keep, and would say throw out the other half and replace it with covers done by more widely popular CCM acts. Or allow some of the artists to do two songs. I can think of Jars of Clay and the Yahweh Love cover off the top of my head, as ones that I really liked.

I think "Pied Piper" and "All the King's Horses" are the only ones I actively don't like, and even the former can be fun in an odd way. I'm a huge fan of the versions of Galactic Cowboys, Jars of Clay, and Audio Adrenaline in particular.

I think perhaps the Galactic Cowboys version of Not Of This World is the only song on this album that I would probably sometimes even prefer over the original.

I had a hard time getting into the Plank Eye song, but I just can't afford to not like this song, since I know it's Jonathan's favourite. And of course Jonathan's opinion is the gold standard here on the zone.

In most cases, the artists were truer to the original than Double Take. Exceptions being Judas Kiss, RCSGW, Pied Piper, All the King's Horses, Louie's Solo. At least the rest kept the original melody. AA's version of Taste and See is fun.

It's a close second. I like the album. I pretty much like all of them except Caprill. When that one comes on I'm all like...
