Poor Old Lu, Prayer Chain, ditto on Iona. I just got a whole slew of Jacob's Trouble (Heartily recommended for fans of DA and the west coast alternative scene). Rush, The Kinks, and Yes on the evil side.

I forgot about Plumb and Iona, that I like.

Chaotic Resolve is an very interesting album and Iona�s Journey into the Morn is one of my favourite. Open Sky is a good album too.

I was actually really impressed with Chaotic Resolve from a musical standpoint. I'm not much into "chick rock" (e.g., BarlowGirl), but musically the album is pretty diverse, even though she stays true to form. I tend to get annoyed with albums that sound the same the whole way through, and that is definitely not the case here.

Hmmmm....

I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately. I have very eclectic tastes. Really love progressive music so I've been listening to a lot of Neal Morse, Spock's Beard and Dream Theater. On the other hand, I love Pillar's new album, as well as Disciple's new one. Kutless is also a favorite. I picked up the new Accappella CD...sweet stuff for those who are into vocal music.

Of course, as a child of the 80's I am listening to a fair share of Journey, Styx and Kansas. I totally agree with lucianotaz about Journey; I was bummed to hear Steve Augeri was forced out of the band. I understand why though...his voice has been an issue for at least the last two years. I think the new guy, Jeff Scott Soto, will do a fine job though. As a little sidenote, Jeff worked with Ken Tamplin (Shout) on Ken's last album.

I miss Petra...I was so thrilled when Jeckyll and Hyde came out...loved the direction they were going with that. I wish they had been given the opportunity to continue. I really wish Paul and Greg had had the chance to record an actual studio album with John and Bob!

right now? megadeth's "united abominations." best 'deth album since countdown to extinction. on regular rotation these days: opeth, porcupine tree, incubus and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, some chill-out courtesy of my wife.

funny, i barely listen to any CCM these days. i'm kind of stuck in the 90s when it comes to christian music - latter-day whitecross, early jars of clay and audio adrenaline, dc talk's last couple of albums... smalltown poet's debut! holy soldier had a good acoustic-rock album back in '95 i believe... that's pretty much it.

there's something about today's CCM that just doesn't ring true for me. everything seems so, i don't know, polished? glossy? tailored? hyped? more inspirational and less spiritual? or maybe i'm just jaded.

i miss '91 when i heard the "beyond belief" album for the first time. armed and dangerous changed my life: the oncoming drums, the tiger growl intro vocals, the righteously-angry guitar riffs and soon enough john schlitt's blistering mega-tenor shattering my speakers... it was raw and powerful rock with a major message.

Although I like the Jeff Scott voice (he has a powerful voice), I do not realize his voice in Journey songs. Let�s see if it will rock !

1. Joe Satriani's the Extremist- A friend gave to me. Its an instrumental Rock album dated 1992. No vocals.

For : Great guitar melodies and exhilerating virtuoso soloing.
Against: Some 80's Rock Rythms appear in 3 or so songs (apologies to 80's Rock enthusiasts- it just doesn't hold up in this day and age-at least for me)

2. December Radio's debut self titled album- December Radio dated 2005 (or is it?)

For: Great rock rythms with aggressive riffs delivered classic style leaning towards light metal.
Against: Of course very few voices measure up to Schlitt's and few lyrics measure up to Bob's writing. Several songs almost sound alike. Production is lower than J&H

All in all I think December Radio is a band to watch. Get yourself a copy and listen or visit the band site.[/list]

Wow - I didn't think I'd see someone else here that is into European power metal.

I am actually somewhat disappointed with Sonata Arctica's new album Unia (which, in Finnish, translates to "dreams") - it has some great songs and performances, although I prefer the band's first album Ecliptica, as well as Silence and Reckoning Night (the band's previous studio release). I was also disappointed that the new album does not have much double bass drum work. However, I still have a huge amount of respect for the guys of Sonata Arctica - and am consistently amazed with their musicianship and versatility (especially considering the fact that vocalist/primary songwriter Tony Kakko - the oldest member of the band - is only 3 years older than me).

Susannah - do you dig any other European power metal bands, such as Stratovarius, Masterplan, Thunderstone, Nightwish, etc.? I am curious to know.

Yeah, I do like Nightwish, Masterplan, Narnia, etc. But Sonata Arctica just really stands out to me, especially because of Tony. I just get chills listening to him sing! The whole band in general is amazing. I was a little disappointed in "Unia" as well, due to the fact that it sounds so different from past albums. It's still a really great, solid album, though. I don't think they could put out a bad album if they tried.

Have you heard of a band called Rhapsody? They're a power metal band from Italy, but I like to call them "medieval metal". When I hear them, I can't help but think of epic battles with knights and dragons. They're another really great band. The Europeans in general make great metal, but as far as I'm concerned, the Finns are the masters--they REALLY know what they're doing!
