I got my copy awhile back, too, and I've given it the requistive five or so listens (it's usually ten, but for a 75-minute CD...).

I have to admit that my perception of this record is similar--it's definitely an 80's sound, with the exception of the one disco track (the name of which I forget). I don't particularly mind the sound, especially because of how many different artists are involved in the project. That being said, it could use a little polish.

I personally don't mind the rap, especially on Rise, which is both a good song and a considerably better vocal effort than provided on In the Kingdom (remember Holy War?). It's definitely not my genre of music, but the blending of the styles really isn't that bad (first introduced to me by Neverlost, though I imagine that Billy Smiley didn't pioneer it at all ;).

Really, though, I think the project will have some issues with sound. It's not the time so much as the need for a bit bigger sound. Still though, with this many people coming together, it's definitely a good buy.

Hehe... Justin, today I emailed CCM Magazine, ChristianRock.net, and Rolling Stone about the CD. :)

You know, the first time I listened I thought, this needs a remix. But after a few times through I got used to it a little bit, and although it does have a bit of a retro flavor, it's not as much as I initially thought. My initial reaction to the rap parts was that the live drums were a mistake (many bands use drum loops for rap sections in their songs instead of breaking it down to just acoustic drums). Now I've come to think that although that might have been a good option in a few cases, the live drums work really well in others.

My fave songs on the CD are the harder ones... "Noise", "Rise". "Dr. Love", "Cain 2 Abel", "One Word", and to a lesser extent, "FHL" for the cool chorus (although that's the one that I think could have really used a drum loop on the parts that are rap). And I think "Bargain Bin" is a scream! That one gets a vote for fun factor alone. :)

Thanks Mike

Thanks Mr.Jones.

I do appreciate that.... to say the album was not rushed would be a lie. This next one I am taking my time ,but in all I like the CD as well
if we had more time and money I would have fixed a few things.
By the way, thanks for the comments esp. about "Cain 2 Abel"
since that was "my" big vocal part.
Check out victoryzine there is a interview on there and I explain
why the rap is on there.

Interviews

Post by Michael » Tue Apr 06, 2004 7:19 am

I did look at all of those interviews yesterday (I even ran the German one through Babelfish... THAT'S always a humorous proposition!) and they were very enlightening. I enjoyed them a lot! Good luck on this CD and on the whole grand scheme... it JUST MIGHT WORK!!! :)

By the way, for anyone who didn't notice... ThePetraZone.net got mentioned in the liner notes! WE'RE FAMOUS!!!!!!!! Image

little known things

Post by justin » Tue Apr 06, 2004 8:08 am

a couple of cool things no one really knows is the lead guitarist
on "The Lord's prayer" is Heart's guitar player. The drummer
on "One Word" is Elton John's drummer and bass player
on that same song is Rod Stewart's bassist. Kinda cool !!!

i've been listening to it since i got it. it took me a bit to figure the lou gramm song out..didn't sound like him LOL however, i really liked the mitch malloy song (been a fan of his for a while) and harry hess from harem scarem was great..love that band except when they changed the name to rubber and tried to be a 90s band, but they had talent. i like most of the sound of it. the rock/rap i could do with out, but that is a personal taste.

i'm sure there are other thoughts, however since the disc is at work and i am at home... my main thought was where was this type of sound 20 years ago? there were just a few good rock acts out there, but for the most part to me it was just some insipid light rock. now if it would start a revolution in the industry... :)

songs

Post by justin » Sat Apr 10, 2004 7:44 am

I wish we could have done a few things diffrent, was really... really rushed at the end. This album is really like 3 albums in one if you listen closely you'll see the changes in the style and musicianship.
I have been working on this album two years and it went through
name changes, artist changes, and song ideas.

Back in March of 02', I saved up $1800 and went into the studio
and started recording a solo album. I can not sing, can hardly talk
(lol, just ask Sue), I went into this to record a rap rock album.
Those being the first tracks being recorded in order were....

1.Cain 2 Abel
2.Dr.Love
3.Bargain Bin
4.Holy Roller (which was called "Dance of Fools")

when Jamie, Dale, and others started to say they would sing on it.....
the album changed and we thought we would do an all-star
CD with me rapping and these other guys singing........
that's when we recorded......

5.Rise
6.FHL

at this time more and more guys were saying they would do it
this is when the album spinned into the AOR 80's record.
Which is the style I prefer

In fact "Dr.Love", was originally sung 100% by Jamie Rowe
(besides the rap) and we went back and had Michelle sing it and left Jamie singing backup. Jamie gave me a demo worktape from his
short lived rap/rock group called Kung Pao Fugitives, which
had "FHL","Rise",and a rapping "Noise". I asked Jamie to rerecord
"Noise" and make it a more Motley Crue sounding song and that's what you hear on the record.

The last three songs were not even suppose to be on there
I just thought the album lacked some real meat. That's
when we added Ken Tamplin, Mitch Malloy, and Robert Fleischman.
We could have just released the rock side, but we thought we already paid
for the rap stuff and had all thes "known" singers on it, why just trash it.
For the most part I like all the songs, I think the first 13 songs
are the best.

"Change Comes Around" was originally a Harem Scarem song that we redid. Mike Roe could not hit the original notes, so I thought it would be
cool to bring in the original singer to sing the choruses. That's
how Harry Hess got involved.

The next record is "my masterpiece", I wish I could play it for you it is incredible !!!! We just finshed a ballad with a 80's rock secular guy and it is really moving and very annoitted. It is a big piano ballad and it is my fav so far. The record is gonna have 15 tracks
and have no rap  .

Anyway I do like "WTTR" and I know God is goona use it, one thing
about the record is it glorifies Jesus in every song.
That is and was my real goal !

Okay, spill it, who's the 80s secular person Justin? Joking. Revolution is a good album, it is a shame you didn't get to spend a little more time with it.

CDs

Yeah... Sue doesn't believe in paying for CDs. I think it's something to do with her religious beliefs, something about being a conscientious objector or something. hehe
