Who do you listen to? video download

Post by p-freak » Thu Jun 03, 2004 6:49 am

Go to http://www.student.kun.nl/p.th.vanwingerden/video. There you can download two videoclips. Both are taken from the Who do you listen to? music video soundtrack, released in 1989 and long since out of print. Who do you listen to? is a very rare Petra-song (written by Bob Hartman and the Elefantes). The other file is from a Mastadon-song that was written by Bob Hartman.

Within a month these files will be deleted.

Thanks, Doug!

Along with the video came a little personal application booklet with bible studies. I will post the lyrics of both songs (Petra and Mastadon) and the bible studies on this board, within a few days.

Sue, I think you only got the full version from me. Didn't the video-edit come from Josh?

Below is the bible study centered around Petra's song Who do you listen to?, taken from the application booklet that comes with the video.

Petra - WHO DO YOU LISTEN TO?

Just an innocent girl with a wide eyed look.
What she needs to know shell never read
In any grade school book
Just an innocent smile
Drives a young man wild.
But what do you do when you're caught somewhere
Between a woman and a child.
Oh, with so much to gain and so much to lose,
You gotta know all the facts before you can choose

Chorus
Who, Who do you listen to?
When they try to tell you
Who do you listen to?
You need to know, but who do you listen to?
You need to trust somebody,
Who do you listen to?

Some people say its safe,
Some people say its love.
Some will get their way
Even if they have to push and shove.
You can risk all your love and be left with hate,
But do you really want to risk your life
When its safer just to wait?
With so much to gain and so much to lose,
You gotta know all the facts before you can choose.

Chorus

There must be someone
that you can depend on;
Someone who wants nothing in return.
Theres a choice to make,
Theres so much at stake.
Only you can choose which path to take.
So who do you listen to?
You need to know, but who do you listen to?
You need to trust somebody,
Who do you listen to?

Performed by PETRA
Words by Bob Hartman
Music by John and Dino Elefante

What does it mean to listen?

Often in the Bible and in life, "to listen" means "to hear" and usually calls for a response.

Read James 1:22-25
  • What is James referring to when he says "the word" or "perfect law"?
    What should our response be?
What promises are we given if we listen to the Word?
What do you think it means when PETRA asks, "Who do you listen to?"

What other voices are telling you how you should live your life?

Read the parable in Matthew 7:24-27
  • What is in store for us if we don't listen and respond to God's Word in every area of our lives?
It's hard sometimes to listen to what God's Word says about life. So why does it seem so much easier for others?

Read Hebrews 4:2
  • What element was missing to some who also heard?
How would you define the word "faith" as it relates to everyday decision making?
In what areas is this easy for you?
In what areas is this difficult for you?

Faith as it relates to life could perhaps best be defined as a confidence that God's Word is reliable and that it can be trusted. That trust in turn reshapes our thinking as we express our trust in God by acting on His Word and putting it into practice.

God never promises that our lives will get easier as we trust Him and try to live our lives to please Him.

Read Matthew 16:24
  • What are we told to do?
    What does the cross signify?
How would you phrase this verse in modern terms?
In our culture we think that "to follow" means to put ourselves in a secondary position. In Bible times the streets were so narrow that two people walking together had to go single file. "To follow" simply means to go with.

In that case, where is Jesus as we're facing all of our decisions and temptations?

Summary:

The goal of hearing God is to have our outlook on life and relationships completely reshaped, so that our values attitudes and understanding of daily living will be determined by God and His Word.

Below is the bible study centered around Mastadon's song Sex, taken from the application booklet that comes with the video. The song was written by Bob Hartman.

Mastadon - SEX

When we want to mesmerize
When we want to advertise
Sex! They use it so well.
When they want a new appeal
When they want to close a deal
Sex! They use it so well.

Sex! It's all you see
In the movies and on TV.
Sex! It's all that you hear
With nothing to hide and nothing to fear
They use it so well when they've got something to sell you.
Sex! They use it so well.
Sex! When they've got something to sell you.

When they want to pass the buck
When they want to press their luck
Sex! They use it so well.
Well, when they want to call the shots
They wait until you grab the hook
Sex! They use it so well.

Sex! It's all you see
In the moves and on TV.
Sex! You know it's all that you hear
With nothing to hide and nothing to fear
They use it so well when they've got something to sell you.
Sex! They use it so well.
Sex! When they've got something to sell you
Sex! They want to mesmerize.
Sex! They want to hypnotize.

Performed by Mastadon
Words and music by Bob Hartman

Have you ever stopped to consider how the media, in all of it's hype and glamour, is dictating to us how we should live our lives, especially in the area of our sexuality?

The media is (in it's own subtle way) establishing standards for us what we believe we must somehow live up to. We seem to think that if we don't meet that standard we are inadequate or inferior.

Let's face it SEX SELLS!

Think of some commercials that you know are selling a product by exploiting sex or through sexual innuendos.

What are these companies communicating to you about who you are and how you should live your life?

In what areas of your life have you compared yourself to those on television or in the movies, and wished that you could change? (i.e. I wish my eyes or hair were a different color, or I wish I could be more like.)

Has that made you feel inadequate or insecure? How?

What about your peers? Do you feel that they expect you to be a certain way or dress a certain way? Do you expect the same of them?

What percentage of how you feel about yourself would you say is ultimately determined by the media?

0% 25% 50% 75% 100%

What percentage of how you feel about yourself would you say is ultimately determined by God and the Bible?

0% 25% 50% 75% 100%

How would you say that God deals with sex in the Bible?

___Positive ___Negative

Read Genesis 1:27-28 & Genesis 2:24-25
  • Who created sex and why?
Do you think that it's possible for God not to approve of something that He has created?
What is the proper context for sex?
Have you ever wondered why God is so in favor of sex between married people, yet still gives so many negative commandments in the Bible regarding sex? Could it be that our confusion here comes from misunderstanding what God is teaching? Never does God tell us that the proper use of sex (sex within marriage) is wrong, only the misuse (outside of marriage).

Why do you think that God gave us a sex drive, then, all through the Bible, forbids us to act on it?

Maybe God's greatest motivation is not to keep us from having fun, but to create for us the greatest opportunity for a love, marriage and sexual relationship. God's commandments are there to protect us and to provide for us.

Summary:

There are a lot of people who would like to tell you how you should live your life, what type of clothes you should wear, how you should act etc. But the only source of information that is truly in our best interest is that which comes from God and His word. Sex is a wonderful gift from God, and is meant to be enjoyed, but within the loving commitment of marriage. True love can never be replaced with sex. There is a whole world out there that would like you to change your standards, and are confusing the intimacy of love with the intensity of sex. Just remember that God's plan is best, and you are worth waiting for!
