John's Woodworking - Question & Answers
I'm doing a little research:
Since there has been a number of requests (serious and just nosy) for John's woodworking, what do you think of his making something like this (see the top project, which is a CD holder):
http://johnwschlitt.com/fans/familywoodworking.htm
or
http://johnwschlitt.com/fans/images/Woodworking/25.jpg
complete with a personally engraved plaque.
Would there be a REAL interest in purchasing something like this, and if so -- what would you consider a fair price?
Keep in mind these are solid wood, hand-crafted and custom built.
Let me know your thoughts on this, or any other project you might consider.

Petheads nosy? Hehehe, never. He is really talented, those are beautiful. While I don't have the cash at hand at this point, I would be glad to buy one from him when I'm able to save up the money. I don't think he should charge less than $100-200 for the smaller CD holder and $200-300 for the larger one. I'm not the leading expert though. Maybe we could get a little feedback on what HE might think is fair since they're hand made and he's the one who would be putting the time and effort into making them.

This might be a bit late since CD's are going away.
Here are some ideas:
Some kind of modern looking wood case/box with the old Petra logo burned into the top of it, filled with all of the CDs from Petra, II Guys and Solo days. He could engrave, "Hey buddy. Thanks for listening. John"
I think they could also follow the KISS guys and offer Petra coffins. He could burn in "Captured In Time AND Space", "Not of This World" or "Killin' My Old Man" on it.
What about getting some cheap guitar bodies + necks ($5 from China) and making CD racks out of them?
I would buy a wood clock that looked like the old Petra logo or a guitar.
How much just to have John come to my house and knock out my honey do list of construction items? THAT would be worth the money.

I think Ed was using satire.....he doesn't think CDs are dead completely. there are too many indies selling half a million CDs in just a few weeks.shawnpfan01 wrote:So since cd's are on their way out does that mean people don't have old cd's that need a place to live? A lot of mine are sitting on a bookshelf, so I for one wouldn't mind having a custom made cd holder.
Hey Sue, in the group of pictures there is a taller shelf is that for dvd's?

cd holder
I think on the cd holder, if I was going to one of the local Amish places, I would expect to pay anywhere between $40 and $100. It would depend on the particular store and the overall quality of the piece, what type of wood was used, and whether it is finished or not. Unfinished from the pine shop, maybe $40. With a nice finish, maybe $50 to $70 depending on the type of finish and work involved. Finished oak from a nicer store, maybe $100 or more.
The Amish guys who make the stuff might get a better price on their materials than John can get. I would say double the price if the piece has a plaque and is autographed and stuff.

ya know
There´s a show in Discovery Home and Health about furnishing your house the exact same way a particular famous celebrity did but with less of 3000 dollars. That´s my goal the day I furnish, making things look fancy for the lowest price.

Seriously - if anyone else is looking for a custom-made to your specs piece of furniture, which would include just about anything - ranging from tables down to CD holders or picture frames - give me a jingle with the size and dimensions you want, along with a photo or drawing so he can see the style you're after - and John can give you a price quote.

John's drawing up a dinning room table for me... I have no idea how it's gonna get to my house, which is many hundreds of miles away, but I guess we'll figure that out when the time comes!
