So here's an off the wall question: Petra fans get up in arms debating the merits of Greg Volz versus John Schlitt, but why don't we ever have heated discussions comparing John Slick to John Lawry, or Mark Kelly to Ronny Cates?

Re: THEY OWNED THE STAGE!!
My opinion which will probably get blasted or flagged is: I love what Slick/Lawry and Kelly/Cates had to offer at their time in Petra and really at their time I felt like they were the right fit for the band and for the most part go back and forth(daily) on with ones I like better. For me its no competition on Schlitt/Volz. I've never felt Volz was a right fit for the band; he has a great voice and vocal range, but he does not have "that rock voice" to carry a rock band. I've always felt this way even back in the early 80's and feel his voice to be more suited for pop and a mix of light rock. His voice is just way too polished for my taste. I think more Petheads feel the same way than care to admit and there are some that feel Schlitt was never right for the band. I'm fine with others opinions on the matter but at times when I've given my opinion on this it seems to offend some even to a point to receiving PM's blasting me as being ungodly and just downright evil. I respect others differing opinions and that is all expect in return.Mountain Man wrote:Well duh.superfly wrote:CITAS

Re: THEY OWNED THE STAGE!!
Yeah, I don't get that. If you listen to rock music from the 70s and 80s, you'll find that Volz actually has a quintessential classic rock voice. It was the style back then for lead singers to have a smoother, more dextrous, more nuanced voice. Listen to Journey, Chicago, Queen, Boston, Bon Jovi, Rush, Styx, Paul McCartney, Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Toto, Europe, and I could name probably a dozen more. There were, of course, some "go ahead" rock singers like Sammy Hagar, Jimmy Page, and Steven Tyler, but Volz's vocal stylings weren't at all out of place. To say that Volz didn't have a rock voice, or that he was "too polished" is to ignore one of the prevailing styles of time.
