Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
During the service, John mentioned that not long after becoming a Christian, he was asked to join two different super groups. He did not mention band names or the people in them. I talked to him after the service, but I forgot to ask him what groups/people he was talking about. Anybody have an idea of who the groups were?

Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
He contributed vocals to a demo project by a band called Ascension (but he was never in the band), but I'm sure they don't qualify as a 'super group'.
These are the names of the guys in the band: Glen Smith (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Gary Stripling (guitars), Greg Smith (bass), Glen Kondourijan (drums).

Thanks for the info. Are the tracks he contributed to available anywhere?p-freak wrote:He contributed vocals to a demo project by a band called Ascension (but he was never in the band), but I'm sure they don't qualify as a 'super group'.

Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
There is, after all, a BIG difference between a "supergroup" and a "super group."

Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
I think one of those tracks was made available to backers during the Kickstarter campaign for The Greater Cause, but I can't remember which one. Ascension eventually only released one cassette album after this, but it was a self-distributed release. I've never seen it anywhere, but since it doesn't have a contribution by John I'm not interested either... The cassette was titled 'Follow the Path'.Adonai wrote:Thanks for the info. Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
You're right - there was one song given to Kickstarter supporters - it was called "Dance of Death."
Ascension was not the band John was referring to... he really wasn't IN the band. He just did a demo for/with them.

I did the dance of death yesterday. Almost didn't make it to the gas station in time, driving back to KC from SD.

Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
Was he talking Christian "supergroups"? Or secular? Weren't too many Christian "supergroups" in the early-80s.
If he was talking secular groups, it could have been anybody.

He did not specify, but the way he said it implied they were secular. He said that he disconnected his phone after receiving those calls because he was not at all interested in singing in a band like that again.Mountain Man wrote:Was he talking Christian "supergroups"? Re: John Speaking in Kansas City
Huh... I always thought John's vocals would have a been a great fit with Journey, but they were at the peak of their popularity with Steve Perry around that time, so I doubt they were in the market for a new frontman.
